Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) is a free public service that provides a communication link between standard telephone (voice) users and persons who are vision-, hearing- or speech-impaired. Shentel strives to meet the needs of all of its customers and works with Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania TRS organizations to provide Relay service to customers subscribing to both traditional wireline telephone service and voice over internet protocol (VoIP) service.
By dialing 7-1-1, customers are connected to their state TRS administrator and a Communications Assistant who will provide assistance in making a TRS call. Types of TRS calls supported by state organizations include Computer (ASCII), Hearing-Carry-Over (HCO), Spanish Relay, Speech-to-Speech (STS), Text Telephone (TTY), TTY User and Emergency Assistance (“9-1-1”), Voice-Carry-Over (VCO), Voice/Standard Telephone, and Captioned Telephone Service (CapTel). Internet Relay and Video Relay Service (VRS) communications may also be supported; please contact your state’s TRS administrator for more information.

Relay services are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with no limit on the number or length of calls a user may make. Anyone may initiate a Relay call at any time by dialing 7-1-1.
